Pepperwood’s Learning Landscapes

These educational outings are perfect for groups and classrooms seeking an immersive half-day learning experience at Pepperwood

Immerse your group or classroom in nature on our 3,200 acre preserve! This collection of expert-led hikes can be catered to groups of all ages. Study bird behavior, try your hand at animal tracking, take an adventurous night hike, and more—choose the expedition that your group or class will enjoy most!

All expeditions require advance registration and are subject to availability of instructors and trail access. Group size is limited to 25 participants. Pepperwood Overview Hike

Get a basic overview of Pepperwood and our ecosystems, including how our plant and animal life is rebounding from two wildfires in two years: the 2017 Tubbs Fire and 2019 Kincaid Fire. Take a hike looking for signs of animals, and learn about the incredible diversity of plants found here. You’ll also visit research sites and learn about Pepperwood’s latest science projects.

Animal Signs Exploration

How do you know animals have been here? Learn about Pepperwood’s wildlife tracking project using motion sensing cameras then head out onto the trail to look for animals, listen for their sounds, and use tracks and scat to discover where they’ve been.

Bird Language and Spotting

Stroll the rolling hills and oak woodlands of Pepperwood as you discover hidden birds through their songs and calls. Spot raptors, songbirds, and others as you learn about the many fascinating and bizarre behaviors of our feathered friends. Binoculars and field guides are provided.

Plants, Trees, and Ecosystems

What types of trees and plants grow at Pepperwood? How are they adapted to our particular climate? Learn about Pepperwood’s plant communities while hiking the hills and having hands-on explorations of leaves, lichens, and others.

Night Hike

How do animals of the night adapt to life in the darkness? Discover the secrets of night life at Pepperwood on this moonlight walk. Perhaps we’ll meet owls, bats, or jackrabbits – or hear the call of coyotes as we explore the world of the night creatures!
