$20 per person ($15 for Friends of Pepperwood)
Ages 12 to 18
Meet at the Bechtel House

During this special workshop for youth ages 12-18, you will learn some of the essential skills for wilderness survival. This is a great class for any young person who is interested in spending time outdoors, hiking, exploring, or camping. You will learn from Stephanie Gonzalez, our Bilingual Environmental Educator, about the most important things to pack for a day hike, overnight or backpacking hike, or camping trip. You will also get to practice constructing a shelter, providing basic first aid, making rope, and different fire making techniques (using fire safety protocols). After this class, you will be more prepared and confident for your future outdoor adventures!

Materials will be provided, and no outdoor or wilderness experience is necessary. Please bring a mask, snacks, lunch, and water. Wear layered clothing appropriate for the weather, long pants, and sturdy closed-toe footwear for the outdoors.

This event includes a slow-paced hike of moderate difficulty, covering up to 2 miles over varied and uneven terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel.

COVID Protocols: All events will follow current regional health safety guidelines. Please bring a mask. Masks are only required while indoors, or when 6 feet of courtesy distance from others cannot be maintained. Please practice good health hygiene, and physical distancing when possible. If you do not feel well, please do not attend.

Instructor: Stephanie Gonzalez
Stephanie grew up in Los Angeles, California, where she attended University of California, Los Angeles, earning a BS in Geography and Environmental Studies. She started her career working on ecological restoration projects as a field technician, conducting wildlife and botanical surveys. Stephanie has worked with a variety of school-aged children in her career, and recently relocated from the central CA coast, where she worked as an Assistant Site Director at the Boys and Girls club and led educational field trips and outdoor classroom sessions for the youth there. Stephanie’s experience working in Baja, Mexico and in Spain as a tutor helped her realize her career goals: environmental education and restoration. She is excited to ignite passion in our local youth, helping them become the next generation of nature’s stewards. In her spare time, Stephanie likes watching Spanish soap operas, going on outdoor adventures, and dancing with friends.
