Wild foods are abundant in the spring season of the California landscape if you know what to look for. Local tribes including the Wappo, Pomo, and Coast Miwok have long held traditional ecological knowledge of these plants. In this class, you will learn from local herbalist Autumn Summers as she shares how to not only identify these highly nourishing wild foods, but also the important elements of sustainably and ethically harvesting them. You will discover new and enticing recipes with a range of ingredients, as well as the nutritional and wellness values these plants can add to your lifestyle. Discover how gathering, preparing, and utilizing foods and herbs from the wild can help you better understand the diversity of plant life around you and build a deeper relationship with your ecosystem.

This class will begin with an introductory presentation, followed by time in the field practicing identification, and then returning to the classroom to explore ingredients and recipes further. Please bring a bag lunch to enjoy during a break.

Instructor: Autumn Summers
From her first herb class over 25 years ago, Autumn has been exploring the many facets of herbalism. An avid gardener and wild foods forager, she teaches on how to grow your own herbs and how to safely and sustainably gather and use abundant edible and medicinal plants, seaweeds and mushrooms in Northern California at the California School of Herbal Studies.  She is passionate about sharing this empowering knowledge with others in a responsible and interactive way.

Ease of Access/Hike Level: This event includes a slow-paced hike of up to 2 miles. This includes traveling over varied terrain with inclines and uneven surfaces. Bathrooms and water are available at the event meeting location.

Weather & Cancellations: This event will go on in light rain. However, it could be canceled in the case of heavy storms, unhealthy air quality or other unforeseen circumstances. In the case of cancellation, registrants will be notified via email.

Though we love dogs, pets are not allowed on the reserve. When visiting Pepperwood, please leave pets at home for their wellbeing and that of our wildlife. Thank you.

Please, no smoking at Pepperwood.

COVID Protocols: Masks are not required. Please practice good health hygiene.  If you do not feel well, please do not attend.
