Saturday, April 20 through Sunday, April 21, 2019
9am – 11am
Meet at the Bechtel House
$150 per participant ($130 for members)
Ages 13 and up welcome
Ever wonder what takes place in the wilderness when we are not looking? Come explore the amazing animals of Pepperwood with local wildlife biologist Meghan Walla-Murphy and Pepperwood’s wildlife specialist Steven Hammerich at this immersive weekend retreat! If we can learn to interpret the language of birds and the signs of animals, we will begin to see and hear the story of the land.
Through the eyes of Pepperwood’s wildlife cameras, Meghan and Steven will show you that the wild things are not as far away as you might think! See bucks rutting, skunks lumbering about, and bobcats sleeking across the screen while you learn about the important wildlife conservation research that Pepperwood is pioneering in the North Bay.
During this weekend we will learn bird language basics and the many intricacies of animal tracks and sign, then visit remote areas of the preserve to test our new skills and find the wildlife cameras that are monitoring Pepperwood’s wild inhabitants.
As an educator, ecological consultant, and writer of books, articles, and essays, Meghan strives to connect people with their internal and external landscapes. As Pepperwood’s wildlife specialist, Steven coordinates volunteers, manages data and equipment, and performs field work for our wildlife camera research.
Most of this class will be held in the field and will include hiking up to 5 miles per day under moderate to advanced hiking levels. Bring a tent or sleep in a bunk in the Bechtel House. The bunk beds available at the Bechtel House are in a shared room, and can be reserved in advance for a fee ($25, non-refundable). Any remaining beds will be first-come, first-served. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast are included.Back To All Events
