Public Hike

9am – 1pm

Meet at the Dwight Center

Ages 10 and up welcome

Join us for fun, exercise, and learning! Explore Pepperwood’s forests and grasslands as you learn about animals, plants, natural history, and the ecological stewardship of our 3,200 acre preserve. This fall season we will explore the bounty of golden hills and other unique seasonal phenomena. See how our landscapes have been impacted by fire, and explore the implications of a changing climate. Find out what Pepperwood is doing to steward the land and build resilience at our preserve and beyond. Participants are invited to bring a bag lunch to enjoy on the hike.

We will be celebrating California Biodiversity Day (held annually on September 7th) during this month’s Public Hike! California is home to more species of plants and animals that are only found here, and more species overall, than any other state in the US! Join us in celebrating the incredible biodiversity of our state with an optional “BioBlitz” during this hike – an effort to find and identify as many species as we can. We will be using iNaturalist to document our observations, adding to a robust set of data which conservation leaders can use to better understand and protect the living things in our beautiful state. We recommend that each household who wishes to participate in this bioblitz has an iNaturalist account, and has the app downloaded before the hike. Not familiar with iNaturalist? That is OK! Our field leaders can support you along the way. Learn how to create an iNaturalist account and to use the platform with these helpful resources. You can also join our iNaturalist project for this event here, to see our results.

This is a moderate to strenuous hike of 3-4 miles, over varied and hilly terrain including uneven surfaces. This event will go on in light rain. However, it could be canceled in the case of heavy storms or unhealthy air quality.

COVID Protocols: All events will follow current regional health safety guidelines. Please bring a mask. Masks are only required while indoors, or when 6 feet of courtesy distance from others cannot be maintained. Please practice good health hygiene, and physical distancing when possible. If you do not feel well, please do not attend.
