How can you tell if one of the trees on your property is dead or alive after the fire? Once you identify a dead tree, should you leave it or have it cut down? At this workshop, you’ll learn how to assess trees damaged by fire—including oaks, firs, redwoods, bays, and madrones—and learn steps you can take to help your property rebound. A short classroom presentation will be followed by a walk to observe trees damaged by the Tubbs Fire at Pepperwood. Light refreshments provided. Dress to be outdoors, rain or shine.

Featuring presentations by:

• Greg Giusti, Registered Professional Forester and UC Cooperative Extension Advisor (emeritus) – Greg’s understanding of wildland fire impacts to forests and trees comes from working directly in the Valley, Clayton, Redwood Valley, Napa and Sonoma fire areas over the past three years. He will share his observations and experiences in determining tree mortality, vigor and survivability.

• Michael Gillogly, Preserve Manager, Pepperwood Preserve – Michael has lived and worked at Pepperwood for 23 years and offers a unique perspective on how the Tub’s fire moved through the preserve and the resulting impacts on the forest environment.

• Anya Starovoytov, Project Manager, Sonoma Resource Conservation District – Anya has worked within federal, state, and local organizations for nearly 12 years focusing on soil science and natural resource conservation. She will discuss Do’s and Don’ts of erosion control on fire-impacted properties.
