Meet at the Dwight Center
Experience a night of celestial wonders! Enjoy an introductory lecture with host Bing Quock, Assistant Director of the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. After dark, Bing will take you on a tour of the sky, showing you how to find and easily remember the bright stars and constellations of the fall season. Then it’s on to stunning views of the Moon and Mars, and winter constellations including Orion, Taurus, and Gemini. We will also look for star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.
Hot tea and cocoa will be served, please bring your own reusable mug. Since this event is scheduled around dinnertime, you are also invited to bring your own picnic dinner. There will be a break to eat as we transition between the classroom presentation and the night sky viewing. You are welcome to bring your own binoculars or personal telescopes, to use in addition to the viewing tools that will be provided. If possible, please use red filters on headlamps or flashlights, in order to help preserve night vision.
This event begins with a lecture presentation, and will be based entirely at the Dwight Center.
Bing F. Quock worked with Morrison Planetarium’s original, home-built star projector from 1973–2003, performed outreach with a mobile planetarium dome during the Academy’s transitional years in downtown San Francisco (while the present museum was being constructed in Golden Gate Park), and now serves as Morrison Planetarium’s Assistant Director, presenting shows using the digital technology which has now become common in modern planetariums.
