Meet at the Dwight Center
Nature Together is our series of engaging events designed specifically for families with children of all ages.
A pond can be an oasis teeming with life! In this family-oriented adventure, join our Pepperwood Educators, to explore the biodiversity found at Pepperwood’s ponds. We will introduce you to common species that we might find in and around the water’s edge, and how to identify them. We will visit the pond in search of aquatic insects, frogs, newts, garter snakes, and turtles. Learn first-hand about the lives of these incredible creatures, their roles in our ecosystem, and the dramatic cycles of life that unfold around a pond.
Please come prepared with clothing and shoes that could get wet and muddy, and consider bringing a dry change of socks/pants. Bring water, a bag lunch, and snacks to enjoy in the field.
Agenda for the Day (times approximate):
- 9:00am – Welcome & Intro at the Dwight Center
- 9:30/9:45am – Prepare for the field, Depart in vehicles to pond*
- 10am – 12:30pm – Exploration of pond & picnic lunch in the field
- 12:30 – Depart from pond, drive back to Dwight Center, closing remarks
- 1:00 – Conclusion, goodbyes!
- *We will travel to the pond in a staff-driven vehicle caravan. Pond access is only available via this caravan, so please plan to arrive on time and be prepared to stay for the duration.
Ease of Access/Hike Level: This event includes a moderate hike of approximately a 1/2 mile, at a slow pace, over varied and uneven terrain. We will carpool in shared vehicles to a location near the pond, and then walk a dirt trail to access the pond. The trail has uneven surfaces (bumps and depressions), and a mild to moderate incline (downhill to the pond, uphill from the pond).
Weather & Cancellations: This event will go on in light rain. However, it could be canceled in the case of heavy storms, unhealthy air quality or other unforeseen circumstances. In the case of cancellation, registrants will be notified via email.
Though we love dogs, pets are not allowed on the reserve. When visiting Pepperwood, please leave pets at home for their wellbeing and that of our wildlife. Thank you.
Please, no smoking at Pepperwood.
