Meet at the Dwight Center

Pepperwood has a rich diversity of oak species and hybrids found within a variety of vegetation types – from chaparral to oak woodland, and mixed evergreen forest. Join Steve Barnhart, Pepperwood’s Education Director emeritus, to examine the biology, ecology, and species identification within this exceptionally diverse group. We will explore the natural history of these magnificent oaks with a lecture presentation, followed by an excursion in the field to observe species first-hand in their various habitats.

Steve Barnhart, Pepperwood Education Director Emeritus, holds years of experience and excellence as a biologist and educator. As a professor at Santa Rosa Junior College, Steve taught biology, botany, and ecology for 37 years – and facilitated a cooperative learning program between Pepperwood and SRJC. Steve is proud to share his knowledge and love of plants with the public, including through the establishment of the Stephen J. Barnhart Herbarium Internship program at Pepperwood. California oaks have been his research interest for over 40 years.
