Indigenous Food Sovereignty: Feeding Our Body and Spirit

Pepperwood sits within the homeland of the Wappo people, and generations of Wappo have stewarded this land and in turn been nourished by it for millennia. However, due to the impacts of colonialism in recent centuries, traditional food-ways and access to practicing them on the landscape was greatly minimized. During this event you will hear from Clint McKay, Pepperwood’s Indigenous Education Coordinator, as he shares about the cultural importance of indigenous food sovereignty and how it is being fostered at Pepperwood for future generations. Learn about some of the local indigenous foods that can thrive in this ecosystem, and the opportunities that lie ahead for supporting not only the health of these plant communities, but also the health and well-being of local Indigenous Peoples.

In addition to an informational lecture, this event includes a slow-paced hike of moderate difficulty, covering 1-2 miles over varied and uneven terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel. Please bring your lunch.

Clint is the descendant of several important local culture bearers that include the late Laura Fish Somersal and the late Mabel McKay. He is a Native speaker of the Wappo language and he also speaks some Pomo and is himself a culture bearer with extensive Native historical knowledge, not only of Pepperwood but also of the entire region. McKay is a capable naturalist with a deep understanding of plant communities and traditional Wappo methods of nurturing them. He is a gifted basket weaver and has served as Chair of the California Indian Basket Weavers Association for two terms. McKay is also a traditional Wappo spiritual leader and he is the headman of a traditional dance group. McKay has a Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education.

COVID Protocols: All events will follow current regional health safety guidelines. Please bring a mask. Masks are only required while indoors, or when 6 feet of courtesy distance from others cannot be maintained. Please practice good health hygiene, and physical distancing when possible. If you do not feel well, please do not attend.
