Meet at the Dwight Center
$40 per person, $35 for Friends of Pepperwood
Ages 13 and up welcome
St. John’s wort, scientifically known as Hypericum perforatum, could be considered a two-faced plant. While it is an invasive and unwelcome weed across the Americas, it has also been used traditionally for centuries as a medicine. Herbalists have turned to St. John’s wort for the treatment of wounds and sprains, from the battlefield to everyday life. In this special workshop, you’ll learn about the medicinal uses of this plant, and how to safely identify and harvest it, while also helping to reduce this invasive species’ presence at Pepperwood! You will be led on a foray in the field by experienced herbalist Autumn Summers, as you gather and then process the plant to make your own St. John’s wort oil for home use!
This event includes a slow-paced hike, of 1-2 miles on varied terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel. All events will align with the current Sonoma County and state health orders and guidelines for group activities to keep everyone safe during COVID-19. In case of cancellation due to weather or health safety measures, refunds will be offered. Masks and social distancing will be required. Our bathroom facilities are sanitized before and after visitor groups.
From her first herb class over 25 years ago, Autumn has been exploring the many facets of herbalism. An avid gardener and wild foods forager, she teaches on how to grow your own herbs and how to safely and sustainably gather and use abundant edible and medicinal plants, seaweeds and mushrooms in Northern California at the California School of Herbal Studies. She is passionate about sharing this empowering knowledge with others in a responsible and interactive way.
