$25 per person, $20 for Friends of Pepperwood
Meet at the Dwight Center
Ages 13 and up welcome

Join Clint McKay, Pepperwood’s Indigenous Education Coordinator for a hike to explore Pepperwood’s landscape, which sits within the traditional homeland of the Wappo people. As we traverse the trails and habitats of Pepperwood, Clint will share insights into his traditional ecological knowledge, focusing on the natural cycles and phenomena of the season.

This event includes a slow-paced hike, of 1-3 miles on varied terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel. All events will align with the current Sonoma County and state health orders and guidelines for group activities to keep everyone safe during COVID-19. In case of cancellation due to weather or health safety measures, refunds will be offered. This event will be limited to a small group of participants per current group gathering requirements. Masks and social distancing will be required. Our bathroom facilities are sanitized before and after visitor groups.

Clint is the descendant of several important local culture bearers that include the late Laura Fish Somersal and the late Mabel McKay. He is a Native speaker of the Wappo language and he also speaks some Pomo and is himself a culture bearer with extensive Native historical knowledge, not only of Pepperwood but also of the entire region. McKay is a capable naturalist with a deep understanding of plant communities and traditional Wappo methods of nurturing them. He is a gifted basket weaver and has served as Chair of the California Indian Basket Weavers Association for two terms. McKay is also a traditional Wappo spiritual leader and he is the headman of a traditional dance group. McKay has a Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education.
