10:00am – 12:00pm
$35 per person, $30 for Friends of Pepperwood
Meet at the Dwight Center
Ages 13 and up welcome
Insects have long been recognized as the most diverse group of living things on earth – with their numbers in both quantity and distinct species outnumbering that of anything else. So where can one begin to understand this rich world of entomology? By taking a hike with an insect scientist! Join entomologist Elliott Smeds for a field exploration at Pepperwood to find and identify local insects. During this outing, you will practice identifying the specimens we find together and learn first hand about the body parts of an insect and the differences between common insect orders. Learn about the fascinating lives of these creatures by exploring their ecological roles and relationships.
This event includes a slow-paced hike, of 1-3 miles on varied terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel. All events will align with the current Sonoma County and state health orders and guidelines for group activities to keep everyone safe during COVID-19. In case of cancellation due to weather or health safety measures, refunds will be offered. This event will be limited to a small group of participants per current group gathering requirements. Masks and social distancing will be required. Our bathroom facilities are sanitized before and after visitor groups.
We highly recommend that you watch our recorded class presentation, Intro to Insects – featuring Elliot Smeds before you join us in the field. This video will give you the background you need to dive right in during our hike! Find it on our YouTube channel here.
