Field Exploration – Discovering Reptiles – PM Session

Saturday, May 22, 2021

1:00pm – 3:30pm
$35 per person, $30 for Friends of Pepperwood
Meet at the Bechtel House
Ages 10 and up welcome

During this family friendly outing you’ll discover the captivating creatures that dwell under Sonoma County’s rocks and logs, and in our ponds and streams. Led by wildlife biologist Jeff Alvarez, you’ll explore the beautiful springtime trails of Pepperwood as we observe a multitude of reptiles and amphibians in their various life stages. Jeff will show you how to make and use a lizard lasso (it’s harmless—don’t worry!), how to find salamanders in the water, and the best places to find snakes, turtles, frogs and others.

This event includes an easy paced hike, of 2-3 miles on varied terrain. It will go on in light rain, though heavy storms will cancel. All events will align with the current Sonoma County and state health orders and guidelines for group activities to keep everyone safe during COVID-19. In case of cancellation due to weather or health safety measures, refunds will be offered. This event will be limited to a small group of participants per current group gathering requirements. Masks and social distancing will be required. Our bathroom facilities are sanitized before and after visitor groups.

Jeff Alvarez is a herpetologist who has specialized in the study of California reptiles and amphibians for more than 30 years, and is excited to share his knowledge. Jeff is the founder of The Wildlife Project, through which he focuses on survey techniques development; the study, conservation, and natural history of herpetofauna; and conducting peer-level special-status species workshops. He has worked with California Red-legged Frogs, California Tiger Salamanders, Western Pond Turtles, and Alameda Whipsnakes for much of his career.
