Meet at the Bechtel House

For many people, the occasional moth in our light fixture or clothing storage is the closest acquaintance we may have among these incredible insects. This special evening program will open our eyes to the often-nocturnal world of moths, and unravel some of the mysteries of these creatures. Learn about common moth families, how to identify them, and gain insight into their fascinating adaptations and lifestyles. With entomologist Chris Grinter as our guide, we will begin the evening with a presentation exploring the lives and features of local moths. This will equip us with the information we need in order to get well-acquainted with the moths we’ll meet next – Chris will demonstrate how to set up a “moth sheet” to maximize our night-time viewing of these Lepidoptera. We will closely observe the species that visit the moth sheet, and practice our identification.

This event includes a slow-paced hike, of 1-2 miles on varied terrain. It will go on with a slight chance of light rain, though steadier rain will cancel. All events will align with the current regional health guidelines. Please bring a mask and be prepared to wear it when indoors (in the bathrooms), and when 6 feet of courtesy distance cannot be maintained from others. In case of cancellation due to weather or health safety measures, refunds will be offered.

Chris Grinter serves as Collection Manager of Entomology at the California Academy of Sciences, and in this role is responsible for all entomology and arachnology collections, but holds particular research interests in the Lepidoptera. Chris teaches annually at the Lepidoptera Course in Portal Arizona, and is also the Secretary of The Lepidopterists’ Society.
