Discovering Pepperwood’s Hidden Wildlife
Pepperwood is home to a rich diversity of wildlife from tiny voles and curious striped skunks to large mammals like puma and black bear. Join us for an inside perspective on the lives of these fascinating animals and how their presence indicates ecosystem health. Since 2012, Pepperwood has been using wildlife cameras to monitor the fauna of the Mayacamas Mountain range using the internationally recognized Wildlife Picture Index method. We will go over all we have learned since implementing the program including how wildlife seems to be responding to the recent wildfires – 2017 Tubbs and 2019 Kincade Fires – that burned the entirety of the preserve. Come away with a renewed appreciation for the inhabitants of our wildlands and how we can co-exist safely.
Steven Hammerich is a lifelong resident of Sonoma County. He grew up on a small farm in northwest Santa Rosa and has always had a connection to the land. He was introduced to Pepperwood in 2010 through classes at the Santa Rosa Junior College. The preserve captured his interest and he immediately became a Pepperwood volunteer. After taking the California Naturalist course at the SRJC, he became a Pepperwood Steward and began working on the wildlife camera project. He earned his BA from Sonoma State University in Environmental Studies, specializing in Conservation and Restoration. As the Wildlife Specialist at Pepperwood, Steven coordinates the Wildlife Picture Index project, including elements of field work, data collection and management, equipment, and volunteer and intern support.
