Discover Nature Webinar – Increasing Biodiversity with Effective Invasive Plant Management

Thursday, September 17, 2020

10:00 – 11:30am
ONLINE using Zoom platform
Free, donations welcome
Ages 13 and up (youth under 13 welcome with adult supervision)

What are the reasons we should care about invasive species? Why are we working to actively remove them? In this special presentation you will hear from Devyn Friedfel, Pepperwood’s Natural Resource Specialist, and Jason Mills, Sonoma Ecology Center’s Restoration Manager, as they discuss the importance of controlling invasive species, and how to do it effectively. Explore the differences in survival strategies among invasive plants, and how these differences can influence control methods: from annuals to perennials, vines to woody plants. Learn the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and how these ecosystem-based strategies can maximize your efforts while minimizing negative impacts on the environment. You will walk away from this presentation equipped with essential information to support you in managing invasive plants at home or on any property you steward.

As Pepperwood’s Natural Resource Specialist, Devyn Friedfel supports Preserve Manager Michael Gillogly in managing the natural resources and infrastructure on site. Devyn runs our volunteer workdays in the field and assists with the sentinel site research projects. Devyn holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies and Economics from UC Santa Cruz.

Jason Mills is a Restoration and Fire Ecologist, Botanist, Licensed CA Tree/Landscape Contractor, and Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in the field. He received his M.S. with distinction for his thesis on prescribed fire in California grasslands. Jason continues to research the effects of invasive plant control methodology in conjunction with restoration practices, and currently uses these skills to effectively guide the management practices on all of Sonoma Ecology Center’s Restoration Department projects.

This lecture will consist of a live multimedia presentation followed by facilitated Q&A.
