Wildfires are inevitable, so wildfires during severe conditions producing extreme fire conditions are inevitable. Discover how homes can ignite during extreme wildfires and how that provides opportunities for preventing home ignitions and the inevitability of Wildland-Urban fire disasters. In this presentation, we will hear from Dr. Jack Cohen about his research on community fire destruction, and gain insight into potential solutions to the home ignition problem.

Using computational modeling, laboratory and field experiments, and investigations of wildland-urban fire disasters, Dr. Cohen’s research discovered that home ignitions during extreme wildfires are determined by the characteristics of a home in relation to a home’s surroundings within 100 feet (30 meters) and called this area the home ignition zone (HIZ). He applied this understanding to develop the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) “Assessing Structure Ignition Potential from Wildfire” training and co-developed the NFPA Firewise USA program.
