Native peoples have developed an intricate and highly-sustainable relationship with the land, plants, and animals of Northern California over millennia. At this lecture, traditional Wappo spiritual leader Clint McKay, the Chair of Pepperwood’s Native Advisory Council, will delve into some of the ways Native peoples maintained a natural balance while tending the wild to create resources such as food and basketry plants. Clint will share the importance of Native practices such as prescribed burning in both cultural and ecological contexts. We will discuss how our local tribes are working in the community to practice and sustain their customs, and how we might learn from their wisdom and deep understanding of the natural world—of which we are all a part.
