Do you appreciate the birds in your backyard, and wish you could name more of them? Curious about the differences between a thrush and a sparrow? Our avian friends provide us with a special opportunity to build a relationship with wildlife, since we can often spot them around us in our neighborhoods and parks. Join Nicole Barden, Pepperwood Environmental Educator and self-proclaimed “bird nerd”, to learn how to identify common birds of Sonoma County. In this interactive class, we will focus on terrestrial, or land-based birds, rather than water birds. Nicole will equip you with terms and techniques to notice and describe the shapes, colors, patterns, and behaviors of the birds you encounter. Learn about choosing the perfect field guide and binoculars to suit your needs. Get an introduction to eBird and BirdsEye – excellent apps which can help you find ideal spots for birding, no matter where you are. You will walk away with improved skills in recognizing common bird families, and helpful tools and resources to carry you forth on your personal birding journey.
Nicole earned her BS in Biology with an Environmental Education minor at Northland College, and is currently an Environmental Educator at Pepperwood. She is an avid birder, and has experience working with animals, including 3 years volunteering at the California Raptor Center. Nicole helps develop and teach Pepperwood’s education curriculum, and serves as the project coordinator for Pepperwood’s breeding bird survey.
This class will consist of a live multimedia presentation and include interactive time for Q&A with the instructor.
