Meet Our Summer Education Assistants

Every year, our new cohort of “TeenNatters” is empowered by program alums who return to serve as inspiring “near-peer” mentors and role models. This summer, we were fortunate to welcome two remarkable Summer Education Assistants (SEAs), Sophia Nguyen and Yesenia Carmona Brito. They share a passion for environmental science and a desire to inspire the next generation. Here’s a glimpse into their backgrounds, experiences, and what motivated them to be a part of this incredible journey.

Sophia Nguyen: The River Kid with Ocean Dreams

Sophia Nguyen is currently a second-year student at Santa Rosa Junior College, majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Environmental Science. With aspirations to transfer to UC San Diego, she dreams of spending her time by the ocean, hanging out with seals, and embracing her inner “ocean kid.” For now, she enjoys being a “river kid” along the beautiful Russian River.

Sophia’s connection to nature runs deep, and her love for the environment is beautifully reflected in her favorite local flower—the Sticky Monkey Flower. She recalls her transformative experience in the TeenNat program, stating, “TeenNat really showed me how to be a scientist. I started looking into the world with more curiosity and aspiring to work in the environmental field. I also treasure the friendships and mentorships that I took away from TeenNat!”

As an SEA, Sophia is eager to give back to the community that shaped her. “I want to learn more from Pepperwood while sharing what I’ve learned so far,” she shares.

Yesenia Carmona Brito: The Student Inspired by Nature’s Wonders

Our second SEA, Yesenia Carmona Brito, is a second-year student at the University of California, Davis. She’s majoring in Environmental Science and Management and is considering a minor in anthropology. Her enthusiasm for the natural world is evident, particularly in her affection for the golden-crowned sparrow. “I especially love their small figure and their yellow spot on their forehead that looks like a crown,” she says. “Every morning, I can hear them outside my window, and it’s an interesting way to wake up!”

Yesenia fondly reminisces about her time in the TeenNat program, specifically the exploration of the Turtle Pond. “Connecting with my peers and with nature was so rewarding. I discovered Sierran tree frogs, different species of spiders, and was amazed by the flame skimmer dragonfly, which I wanted to do a project on.”

Her motivation to become a SEA stems from a desire to work with students interested in nature and to help them develop new skills. “During TeenNat, I was inspired by the Summer Assistants; I want to give back by helping students continue their path in exploring environmental conservation and other careers,” Yesenia shares.

To Exciting Journeys Ahead

It has been a joyful summer exploring, learning, and celebrating the wonders of our natural world together with these passionate individuals! We wish them all the best in their next ventures as they continue their professional journeys!
