Back in July of 2021, the New York Times did a short film and explainer about the need for controlled burning in California. The setting actually took place here in Sonoma County, and interviewed several folks you’ve likely heard about including Sonoma County Fire Chief Marshall Turbeville. Throughout the video, they speak to several questions that frequently arise around controlled burning, and they address the problems that arise around implementing more controlled burning throughout the state, from capacity shortages (active solution: Burn Boss Certification) to community members’ trauma-induced fears around setting intentional fires (active solution: creating space for a dialogue, and resources for furthering knowledge).
